Cannabis Growing Laws in Canada

There are literally thousands of cannabis strains to choose from, which can be quite daunting if its your first time looking to buy cannabis seeds to grow weed. The two most major types among all strains are Cannabis indica and Cannabis sativaCannabis indica are short and bushy plants with characteristics of having dark green leaves that are very broad. They usually reach a height of 4-8 ft. and are more commonly seen in Central and Southeast Asia. Cannabis sativa, on the other hand, are known for their long, thin and light green leaves that are sparsely present in their longer plant height of about 8-12 ft. Sativa are more common in tropical areas, and the plant is known to emit a sweeter odor as compared to the strong and pungent odor of the indicas. When it comes to their effect in the body as a medicinal tool, both provide a certain relief from pain. Indicas are best for treating insomnia as well as acting as a relaxant that helps during anxiety attacks, nausea, and muscle spasms. Sativas, meanwhile, causes cerebral effects which make the users feel optimistic and energetic which help during migraines, nausea, and depressions.

Choosing the Right Strain to Grow

The most important thing to consider when planning for your own cannabis farm is the kind of cannabis strain to grow. Factors such as the climate, light density, location, and the set-up you plan will definitely affect your choice of cannabis strain to use.

Cannabis Sativa

When cultivating the cannabis sativa strain, it should be remembered that they come from a tropical environment wherein there is an abundance of sunlight available for the plants. Since the sativa strain has the characteristic longer and thinner buds than the indicas, more intense light is needed for the buds to thicken and reach their maturity. Being a large bush-type plant, sativas are best grown outdoors where space is much bigger. Usually, more than 12-13 hours of light daily is required during the vegetative state of the sativas. With a few more degrees added during the germination stage of the seeds, the tropical environment to which they’re suited can be imitated, assisting in the production of more sprouts from the planted seeds. Meanwhile, 9-15 weeks is the amount of time it takes for the sativa buds to flower; once they started flowering, you can expect you sativas to fully mature after 10-16 weeks.

Cannabis Indica

In contrast, cannabis indica are most suited under cooler climates for cultivation since they came from places where harsh and variable weather exists. Indicas can even mature faster if exposed for about 4 weeks under extra artificial lights. This makes them more suited for starting farmers since they are faster and easier to grow and they tend to produce better yields as compared to those of the sativas. For cultivation, indicas are best grown indoors. Growth under more controlled conditions is preferred since these plants are more compact and they do not grow as much as the sativas. Their buds will be thicker and denser and once they start flowering, only about 6-8 weeks will be needed for them to mature. This makes them the fastest cannabis strain to mature.

Growing the cannabis

growing cannabisCultivation of cannabis is now usually done either through growing in soil or water. The usual method preferred by farmers is soil growing but the concept of soilless growing, where aquaponics is best known, is gaining interest among them. Different conditions should be considered prior to cultivation. Strict control of the climate conditions is the best way to ensure a productive yield. Here are some of the things to remember when growing a cannabis farm:

Selecting the place to grow. You can grow cannabis either indoors or outdoors. Just remember to know what the necessary requirements your cannabis strain needs. Also, make sure your chosen place is secure.

  1. Soil type. A pH of 5.8- 6.5 is necessary for the plants to better absorb nutrients around it.
  2. Light supply. Since sunlight is not available when cultivating indoors, artificial lights must be placed. The light available in the natural environment of the chosen cannabis strain must be imitated.
  3. Humidity. Since this is critical during seedling germination, a humidity level of 65%-80% must be maintained.
  4. Temperature. To prevent disrupting the process of photosynthesis, 32 degrees F to 90 degrees F is conducive for cannabis. But the best temperature is at 70 degrees F to 75 degrees F.
  5. Water. Avoid overwatering your plants. Water only every 2-4 days, depending on the time it takes for your soil to become considerably dry.
