Harold & Kumar – all of them
Harold & Kumar take us on some wild journeys in their movie trilogy, from searching for the perfect burger, picking up the greatest hitchhiker of all time in Neil Patrick Harris, to smoking blunts with the president whilst on the run from Guantanamo Bay this trilogy of movies are an excellent starting point for all stoners, they even did a Christmas movie to help you stay festive.
“Study High, Take The Test High, Get High Scores” words I lived by at university. Method Man and Redman team up to show they can kill it in every median. Watch as the duo finds the perfect way to ace their college exam and try figure out life at Harvard University.
Friday – All of them
Ice Cube’s writing and acting combine in the Friday series and replace all the anger he shows in his music with humor. In the original film Cube and Chris Tucker play unemployed stoners who smoke all the weed they were meant to sell and go into hiding from the drug dealer and local oversized bully. This trilogy of films may not have you rolling on the floor but are must watch for stoners.
After one of the gang gets arrested for killing a diabetic police horse this gang of lovable stoners has to raise money to pay the $1million bail. With Dave Chappelle at the helm they start selling stolen pharmaceutical weed. Keep your eyes out for as many celebrity stoners as this film has more cameos than Stan Lee.
Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
Away from the traditional laugh out loud stoner comedies is Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas, see Las Vegas through the eyes of Hunter S. Thompson and never see the world the same again. One of Johnny Depp’s most underrated movies will show you a different side of Vegas; a weekend of drugs, alcohol and gonzo journalism is everything you need to do Vegas right.
Since Freaks and Geeks came out in 1999 Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen & James Franco have been household names and with the help of Evan Goldberg (co-writer of Superbad) they created Pineapple Express. As a process server becomes the witness to a murder by a dirty cop him and his stoner drug dealer go on the run from the cop and the local drug lord. If you take anything from this film, make it the cross joint.
Arguably not a stoner film Dogma is the perfect mix of religion and hilarious comedy starring an obscene amount of big names for a cult comedy. Jay and Silent Bob go on a cross country adventure with Bethany – an abortion clinic worker who is called upon to save humanity. On the way we meet Alan Rickman as the voice of god, Chris Rock falls out of the sky and reveals himself to be the 13th apostle and, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck join the party as fallen angels trying to get back in to heaven.
Dazed & Confused
Alright, Alright, Alright. Everyone loves the last day of school right? Richard Linklater’s classic high school comedy, everyone is out trying to get high, drunk or laid or the trifecta if they’re lucky so why not spark up and kick back with them. If you love this film why not follow it up with Richard Linklater’s college comedy Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)
The Big Lebowski
The Dude & The Coen Brothers. Need I say anymore? This cult classic should be on everyone’s watch list and not just stoners. The Dude is mistaken for a millionaire who shares his name, his house is raided by thugs and is rug is ruined, he seeks out his name sake to gain some compensation for his rug and he ends up taking on a job for the millionaire which only leads to more trouble!
Cheech & Chong – all of them
Up in Smoke is one of my favourite movies of all time and is a go to stoner movie for me but the duo continued to release great films as well as continuing there careers as stand ups and musicians, 11 albums and 8 films later the duo still live on as legends in the stoner film genre. No list would be complete without them and they truly deserve their place at the top of the list.
